US imposes 50% tariffs on Indian products as Trump threatens Russia with ‘economic war’

US imposes 50% tariffs on Indian goods amid Trump’s warning of ‘economic war’ on Russia
August 26, 2025 – The United States has started enforcing a 50 percent tariff on all imports from India, marking one of the highest duties Washington has ever levied. The move comes as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on India over its growing energy and defence ties with Russia, which the US claims could face an “economic war” if it does not cooperate on Ukraine.
The tariffs, effective Wednesday, apply to Indian exports entering the US for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses. Exceptions include in-transit shipments with proper certification, humanitarian aid, and items covered under reciprocal trade agreements. The White House stated the measures are a response to India’s purchases of discounted Russian oil, which US officials say indirectly supports Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to defend the interests of Indian farmers despite the economic cost and is preparing to strengthen ties with China, with his first visit in seven years scheduled for the end of the month.
Industry groups warn the tariffs could affect around 55 percent of India’s $87 billion in exports to the US, benefiting competitors such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China. Pankaj Chadha, president of the Engineering Exports Promotion
