Turkish FM Fidan Meets Russian and Kazakh Counterparts at BRICS Summit, Discusses Regional Tensions
July 7, 2025 – Rio de Janeiro — On the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Brazil, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held key diplomatic meetings with his Russian and Kazakh counterparts, focusing on both bilateral relations and pressing regional developments.
Fidan met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday to review political and economic ties between Ankara and Moscow, with particular emphasis on deepening cooperation in the energy sector, according to diplomatic sources.
The two ministers also exchanged views on a range of regional and global concerns, including the escalating situation in Gaza, Israel’s increasingly aggressive policies, Iran’s nuclear program, and the ongoing humanitarian and political challenges in Afghanistan.
In a separate meeting, Fidan also sat down with Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu. The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the discussions highlighted continued cooperation between Türkiye and Kazakhstan across political, economic, and regional platforms.
Türkiye’s BRICS Participation
The meetings took place during the two-day BRICS summit, which convened in Rio de Janeiro with a focus on global governance reform, security, and strengthening the Global South.
While not yet a full member, Türkiye received a special invitation to attend this year’s summit as part of its application to join the BRICS bloc. The group currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with several new nations recently added.
Türkiye has emphasized its interest in closer engagement with BRICS as part of its broader foreign policy vision to diversify global partnerships and expand its diplomatic footprint beyond traditional alliances.
