Transport Minister: Istanbul Airport Again Europe’s Busiest by Flight Volume”

Türkiye placed sixth in Europe for air traffic, averaging 3,992 daily flights between June 23 and 29, according to Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu.
Istanbul Airport led Europe in flight traffic during the final full week of June, averaging 1,553 daily flights, Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced on Friday.
According to Uraloglu, the airport outpaced major European hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, and London Heathrow between June 23 and 29. Antalya Airport, serving Türkiye’s Mediterranean tourism region, also made the top tier by placing 10th, handling an average of 996 flights per day.
Türkiye rises in European rankings
Citing data from the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), Uraloglu noted that Türkiye ranked sixth overall among European countries in air traffic volume during the same period, with an average of 3,992 flights daily—surpassing nations like Greece, the Netherlands, and Poland.
“Türkiye is no longer merely a transit point in air travel; it has transformed into a regional and global aviation hub,” Uraloglu said.
He highlighted that average daily flight numbers in Türkiye have climbed 15% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Moreover, Türkiye stands among just six countries in the Eurocontrol top 10 that have managed to return to or exceed their pre-COVID flight volumes.
Global standing
Uraloglu also pointed out that Istanbul Airport ranked seventh globally among the top 25 airports for departures, recording an average of 773 outbound flights per day over the same week.
