Prabowo slams deadly unrest in Indonesia sparked by lawmaker perks

Prabowo condemns deadly unrest over lawmakers’ perks in Indonesia

Protests against lawmakers’ perks have spiraled into Indonesia’s worst unrest in a decade, leaving at least six people dead, dozens injured, and 20 missing.

President Prabowo Subianto denounced the violence — including the burning of parliament buildings in several cities — as “an attack on democracy,” blaming rioters for attempting to derail national development.

The unrest intensified after the death of 21-year-old delivery driver Affan Kurniawan, killed by a police armored vehicle. Rights groups have accused security forces of excessive force, with the UN urging an investigation.

Prabowo visited victims in hospital, pledged accountability for misconduct by officers, and announced cuts to lawmakers’ allowances and a freeze on foreign trips in an attempt to calm public anger.
