World Marks 9th Anniversary of Türkiye’s Defeated Coup with Global Commemorations
Ceremonies across the globe were held on Tuesday to mark the 9th anniversary of the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye, paying tribute to those who lost their lives defending democracy and underscoring the country’s ongoing struggle against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).
Events took place in a wide range of countries including Greece, Russia, the UK, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, and more—reflecting international solidarity with Türkiye’s fight to preserve democratic institutions.
In Athens, Türkiye’s ambassador emphasized the need for regional cooperation against FETO, the group held responsible for orchestrating the attempted overthrow. Similar messages were echoed at ceremonies in Brussels, London, Amman, and Moscow, where Turkish diplomats highlighted the threat FETO still poses internationally.
Embassies in Malta, Kuwait, and Pakistan held solemn remembrance events honoring the martyrs and stressing the importance of global counterterrorism collaboration. In Bishkek, a photo exhibition and documentary screening reflected on the night of the coup, while ceremonies in cities like Sofia, Pristina, and Skopje reiterated support for democratic resilience in the face of terrorism.
The Turkish Embassy in Bern hosted a commemorative ceremony attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Sebnem Incesu, along with members of the Turkish community. Additional events were held in Zurich and Geneva to mark Democracy and National Unity Day.
The July 15 coup attempt left 253 people dead and more than 2,700 injured. Türkiye continues to pursue international efforts to dismantle FETO’s global networks and honor the legacy of those who defended the nation’s democracy.
