EU foreign policy chief says diplomacy window remains open amid Iran nuclear deadline
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has highlighted that the 30-day countdown triggered by European powers offers a key chance to pursue diplomatic solutions to Iran’s nuclear program.
The countdown, initiated by France, Britain, and Germany, could automatically reinstate UN sanctions if Iran is found to be in violation of the 2015 nuclear agreement, under which Tehran had agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
Kallas told reporters on Friday, “We are entering a new phase with these 30 days, which also gives us an opportunity to genuinely seek diplomatic solutions. We have this time to sort things out.”
Iran responded cautiously to the move, warning it would “respond appropriately,” raising concerns that the measure could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Despite this, European officials remain cautiously optimistic. The UN has described the period as a “window of opportunity” to negotiate a new agreement. France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized that while the urgency to curb Iran’s nuclear escalation is real, “this does not signal the end of diplomacy.”
In the coming weeks, European powers are expected to intensify diplomatic engagement, seeking to secure a compromise with Tehran before sanctions are automatically reinstated.
