Türkiye will hold a tender for 5G services on October 16, aiming to introduce the next-generation mobile network in 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced on Sunday.

The move is expected to boost the nation’s digital infrastructure, offering higher speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity.

A presidential decree issued in the Official Gazette on August 16 set the process in motion, with the tender scheduled for October 16, according to the ministry.

The rollout forms part of wider strategies to advance technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, and smart manufacturing, according to a report by the Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK).

Various industries will benefit from the service

Tests held last year showed 5G speeds reaching 7.5 gigabits per second in labs, while live networks achieved 4.7 gigabits.

Once launched, the high-capacity 5G system will be able to transmit data at speeds up to 1 gigabit to more than 20 billion connected devices. Broader bandwidths will enable new functions across industries.

The network will also feature “slicing” technology, allowing operators to divide network capacity into segments to allocate resources based on demand.

Smart devices will maintain connections even when moving at speeds beyond 500 kilometres per hour (310.6 miles per hour). BTK noted the 5G network will be more energy-efficient, cutting battery use by up to 90 percent.

Currently, 5G is available at stadiums of Türkiye’s four top football clubs, IGA Istanbul Airport, and around 30 other locations, including the Grand National Assembly in Ankara. A nationwide rollout is expected to unlock new opportunities in AI, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), and smart city projects.
