Fresh rain spell kills 13 in northwestern Pakistan, death toll tops 460 in two weeks

At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured as fresh monsoon rains triggered flash floods and landslides in northern Pakistan on Sunday, pushing the death toll to more than 460 in less than two weeks, authorities and local media reported.

The latest casualties came from multiple districts of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, the hardest-hit region, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). At least eight deaths were reported in Dera Ismail Khan, while three children lost their lives when the roof of their home collapsed in the remote Dir district near the Afghan border. Over 40 others were injured in Dera Ismail Khan as torrential rains and strong winds battered the district.

Since August 15, KP alone has recorded 406 fatalities, including 337 in Buner district, which suffered the brunt of the flooding. More than 60 others have died in Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Fresh rains also struck Gilgit-Baltistan on Sunday, triggering landslides and blocking key roads. Nationwide, nearly 800 people have died in rain- and flood-related incidents since late June, according to the National Disaster Management Authority.

The meteorological department has warned of further downpours in northwestern and northeastern regions over the next 24 to 48 hours.
