Frank Caprio, the ‘world’s kindest judge,’ passes away at 88
Frank Caprio, the American judge who gained global admiration for his compassion in the courtroom, has died at the age of 88 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
His passing was confirmed in a message shared on his official Instagram account on Wednesday, which described his fight against cancer as “long and courageous.”
“Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his service and his humanity. His humor, warmth, and kindness left an unforgettable impression on everyone who knew him,” the post read. “He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but also as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.”
Caprio became widely known through recordings of his courtroom sessions, where he often showed empathy toward those facing fines, frequently reducing or dismissing penalties for people in difficult circumstances. This earned him the affectionate title of the “nicest judge in the world.”
Just a day before his death, Caprio had shared an emotional message with his followers, asking them to keep him in their prayers as he struggled with a recurrence of cancer.
“As I continue this difficult journey, your prayers will lift my spirit,” he said in the post. “I ask you again, if it’s not too much, that you remember me in your prayers. I’m a great believer in the power of prayer.”
Caprio leaves behind a legacy of compassion and humanity that stretched far beyond the courtroom.
