The visit comes as India and China aim to restart border trade and repair relations amid global trade strains caused by US tariffs.

China’s foreign ministry announced Saturday that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India from Monday to Wednesday for discussions on their disputed Himalayan border.

This marks only the second high-level meeting since the deadly 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar traveled to Beijing in July.

Ties have been gradually improving since last October’s agreement on border patrolling, ending a five-year standoff that strained trade, investment, and travel.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China — his first visit since 2018.

Officials from both sides say talks include resuming border trade halted five years ago, as US tariffs shake global commerce. Longtime rivals for influence in South Asia, the two powers are now seeking common ground in a turbulent geopolitical and economic climate.
