Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a phone call on Tuesday to discuss regional developments, defence cooperation, and bilateral trade, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Presidential Communications Directorate.
At the top of the agenda was Türkiye’s planned procurement of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, a multi-nation fighter aircraft produced by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Both leaders reviewed the latest progress in the deal, with Erdogan highlighting its strategic value for NATO and for Türkiye–UK defence ties.
While the UK has supported the sale, Germany has previously blocked the export, citing political and strategic concerns. However, a recent shift in tone from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has raised hopes of a breakthrough. Merz expressed openness to approving the sale during a statement last week, marking a possible softening of Berlin’s position.
Trade and Economic Ties
The two sides also discussed modernising the Türkiye–UK Free Trade Agreement, expressing confidence that a revised deal could be reached by the end of 2025. Officials say updates to the current framework could significantly expand bilateral trade and investment, particularly in advanced technology and services sectors.
Gaza Crisis Addressed
President Erdogan also raised deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning that civilian deaths from starvation continue to rise. He called for the immediate and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave, urging the UK and other international actors to take action to ensure safe passage for food, water, and medical supplies.
