Türkiye Commemorates 51 Years Since Cyprus Peace Operation, Vows Continued Support for Turkish Cypriots’ Rights

Türkiye Commemorates 51st Anniversary of Cyprus Peace Operation, Reaffirms Commitment to Turkish Cypriot Sovereignty

On the 51st anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, Türkiye renewed its pledge to defend the rights and freedoms of Turkish Cypriots. Marking the occasion known as Peace and Freedom Day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), where he inaugurated new development projects and expressed solidarity with the Turkish Cypriot community.

In a statement on social media, President Erdoğan extended his heartfelt congratulations:

“I offer my full support to our Turkish Cypriot brothers and commemorate with respect those who became martyrs for their rightful struggle. We remain grateful to our veterans whose courage helped secure freedom.”

Türkiye Stands Firm on Cyprus

Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement reiterating that the 1974 intervention, carried out in line with international guarantees, protected Turkish Cypriots from violence and ensured their survival.

“Thanks to the operation, Turkish Cypriots now live in peace and security under the TRNC flag,” the statement read. “As a guarantor state, Türkiye will persist in defending the TRNC’s rightful claims to political equality and sovereign status as co-owners of the island.”

1974 Operation: A Defining Moment

Burhanettin Duran, Director of Communications for the Turkish Presidency, described the military intervention as a key moment in modern history.

“The Peace Operation was a legitimate and necessary move to resist oppression and safeguard the basic rights of Turkish Cypriots,” he said. “Our struggle today is not just historical—it’s part of our future vision.”

Duran quoted Erdoğan, emphasizing unity with Turkish Cypriots:

“We may bear different names, but on the matter of Cyprus, our shared identity is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”

Background: A Divided Island

Cyprus has remained divided since Türkiye’s military action in 1974, which came after a Greek-backed coup sought to unite the island with Greece. In response, Türkiye exercised its rights under the Treaty of Guarantee to protect the Turkish Cypriot population. The TRNC was officially declared in 1983.

Efforts to reach a lasting peace have stalled. The Turkish Cypriots have long supported a solution based on sovereign equality. Yet, repeated negotiations—including the 2017 Crans-Montana talks—have ended without success. Notably, Turkish Cypriots voted in favor of the UN’s Annan Plan for reunification in 2004, but it was rejected by the Greek Cypriot side, which later joined the EU.
