Pashinyan: Armenia Seeks to Reopen Border with Türkiye, Normalize Relations

Pashinyan: Armenia Aims to Reopen Border with Türkiye, Pursue Diplomatic Normalization as Part of Pro-West Pivot

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that establishing diplomatic relations and reopening the border with Türkiye are within reach, calling the move essential to Armenia’s independence, sovereignty, and strategic reorientation toward the West.

Speaking at a press conference in Yerevan on Wednesday, Pashinyan characterized recent dialogue with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as “open and sincere,” noting that the talks covered a wide range of topics—from regional connectivity to the restoration of historical landmarks like the Ani bridge.

“Diplomatic ties and the reopening of the border are no longer abstract ideas; they are tangible goals we are steadily approaching,” Pashinyan said. “These steps are vital not only for regional peace but also for Armenia’s long-term national interests.”

While he acknowledged that no final agreements were reached, Pashinyan stressed the importance of taking a patient, trust-building approach. “Complex issues like these cannot be solved overnight. We need public readiness and a strategic outlook,” he said.

“I am confident that the time will come when our borders are open and formal diplomatic relations are established.”

Regional Shifts and EU Aspirations

Pashinyan also reiterated that Armenia is unlikely to rejoin the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), citing the bloc’s failure to assist Armenia during periods of regional tension.

“Our participation in CSTO activities has been frozen. Based on recent developments, returning appears less likely than a complete withdrawal,” he said.

Separately, during a visit to Brussels, Pashinyan confirmed Armenia’s ambition to join the European Union, stating: “Yes, Armenia wants EU membership. Regardless of the outcome, we will continue implementing reforms in line with European values.”

He reaffirmed support for the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, calling it a cornerstone of Armenia’s modernization efforts and democratic transformation.
