Türkiye calls for swift end to violence in Syria’s Suwayda region
Türkiye has voiced deep concern over the recent deadly clashes between Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias in Syria’s southern Suwayda province, which have left more than 30 people dead and nearly 100 injured.
“We hope the violent incidents in southern Syria will be quickly resolved through local-level dialogue initiated by the Syrian government and that security will be restored,” said Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli in a statement on Monday.
Emphasising that Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain a priority, Keceli added: “Türkiye will continue to support efforts by responsible international actors to promote stability and reconciliation in Syria.”
According to initial reports from Syria’s Interior Ministry, the deadly clashes took place in Al-Maqous, Suwayda, late Sunday. The ministry said it was “deeply concerned and saddened” by the fighting, which erupted between local armed groups and tribes.
In response, Syrian authorities announced that Interior Ministry units, in coordination with the Defense Ministry, would directly intervene to stop the conflict, impose security, and bring those responsible to justice.
Local sources reported the violence began after rival groups confiscated each other’s vehicles, leading to an intense escalation involving medium and heavy weaponry.
Meanwhile, Syrian media reported that Israeli warplanes struck the town of Al-Mazraa, located northwest of Suwayda city. State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV said the attack took place late Sunday, though details on casualties or damage have not yet been released.
Earlier Monday, Syrian forces also launched a security operation in the region to restore order.
