Türkiye’s Fidan: Supporting Israel’s Actions Damages Credibility Worldwide

Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan Comments on Gaza Crisis, Iran-US Nuclear Talks, and Russia-Ukraine Peace Efforts Following BRICS Summit

July 8, 2025 — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed key international issues including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, ongoing Iran-US nuclear negotiations, and peace talks between Russia and Ukraine after attending the recent BRICS summit held in Brazil.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Fidan remarked that as the situation in Gaza deteriorates dramatically, even some of Israel’s traditional allies are distancing themselves. “Supporting genocidal actions by Israel is increasingly seen as damaging to any country’s reputation,” he said.

Fidan noted that only a handful of countries still openly back Israel’s policies, with the United States leading this group. “The vast majority of the international community verbally condemns the violence in Gaza and advocates for a two-state solution, but the failure to produce tangible outcomes exposes deep systemic flaws that must be addressed,” he added.

Türkiye continues to engage closely with all parties involved in the ceasefire talks. “We have met with Hamas multiple times to convey the views and suggestions of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before their latest response,” Fidan said.

He reiterated Türkiye’s steadfast call for an immediate ceasefire, the facilitation of humanitarian aid, and a peaceful resolution based on a two-state solution. “Despite Israel’s intensifying campaign of mass violence, we remain committed to pursuing diplomatic solutions in close cooperation with our partners and allies,” he affirmed.

Negotiations in Doha are ongoing, and developments are expected to become clearer in the near future.

Iran-US Nuclear Negotiations

On the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Fidan held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding the ceasefire and the potential revival of nuclear talks. “The ceasefire is currently holding, and both sides are respecting it, but the outlook for restarting nuclear negotiations is uncertain,” he said.

Fidan also met with US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff, who shared Washington’s views with Tehran. “We hope that a diplomatic resolution will be reached soon and that the situation does not escalate,” Fidan added.

Progress on Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

Regarding the Istanbul peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Fidan highlighted the significant achievements of the initial rounds, including record prisoner exchanges and the return of fallen soldiers. “These results demonstrate the positive impact of mediation diplomacy,” he noted.

Both parties have appreciated Türkiye’s role, yet discussions continue on whether a permanent or temporary ceasefire will be reached and whether it will come through a summit or negotiations.

“Each side has differing views, but we encourage continued dialogue to bridge gaps and explore creative solutions,” Fidan said.

Potential Leaders’ Summit

On the possibility of a summit involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, former US President Donald Trump, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Fidan said there are no fundamental objections. All parties, including Russia, are open to such meetings.

However, Russia has requested certain conditions to be met before proceeding, which must be resolved by the negotiating teams. “Russia is ready for a third round of talks; we await Ukraine’s response and continue to maintain contact with both sides,” he explained.

Fidan also underscored the value of international forums like BRICS for bilateral discussions. “Türkiye’s balanced international stance has made its voice highly respected and sought after globally,” he said, calling the BRICS summit a productive platform.

One major theme at the summit was the urgent need to reform the current global governance system and correct its shortcomings.

Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change

Fidan highlighted discussions on artificial intelligence, emphasizing the need to maximize its benefits while addressing risks of global inequality and technological dominance. “The international community and organizations must remain vigilant on these issues,” he said, reflecting Türkiye’s strong focus on the topic.

On climate change, Fidan stressed Türkiye’s firm commitment to its environmental pledges. “The nations around the table, which represent half the world’s population and 40 percent of global GDP, share serious concerns about climate challenges,” he noted.

Condolences for Fallen Soldiers

Fidan concluded by expressing condolences to the families of 12 Turkish soldiers who lost their lives due to methane gas exposure during a counterterrorism operation in northern Iraq’s Operation Claw-Lock zone.

“May the souls of our heroes rest in peace. We will continue to protect our homeland with unwavering dedication,” he said.
