Ankara reiterates backing for Syria during joint talks in Damascus

Türkiye underscores support for Syria’s future, vows deeper ties across sectors

Türkiye’s Head of Communications Fahrettin Altun has reiterated Ankara’s unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty and future, highlighting efforts to broaden collaboration in all areas.

Speaking via a message to a panel held in Damascus on Tuesday, themed “Cooperation on the Path to Peace and Stability: Türkiye-Syria Brotherhood,” Altun noted that ties between the two countries extend far beyond mere geography, rooted in longstanding cultural, historical and religious bonds.

Altun reflected on the hardships Syrians endured under the Baath regime, which he described as responsible for immense human suffering and the deaths of hundreds of thousands. He welcomed the end of that era, expressing optimism that Syria was now on a path toward greater peace and prosperity.

He stressed that Türkiye has consistently stood with the oppressed, especially during Syria’s most trying years, commending President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s steadfast commitment to supporting Syrians. Türkiye’s extensive aid—ranging from humanitarian assistance to healthcare, education and livelihood programs for displaced Syrians both inside Syria and in Türkiye—was delivered through agencies such as AFAD, the Turkish Red Crescent and TIKA, Altun added.

Strengthening bilateral cooperation

Reaffirming Ankara’s position that Syria must be free to shape its own destiny, Altun pointed to new efforts underway to boost ties in multiple areas.

“After reopening our embassy in Damascus, our consulate in Aleppo has also resumed operations. Turkish Airlines is flying again to Damascus,” he said. He noted that bilateral contacts were growing in civil aviation, trade, health and energy.

Altun also emphasized joint work in media, communications and public diplomacy, particularly in countering disinformation, mentioning close engagement with Syria’s Information Ministry. He expressed hope that the panel would help further cement relations between the two nations.

Focus on future collaboration

The gathering brought together academics, journalists, NGO representatives, government officials and international guests. Discussions centered on how to advance cooperation in media, communications and efforts to rebuild social cohesion within Syria.

The event concluded with the screening of a documentary, “The Syrian Conflict: Türkiye’s Peace Diplomacy,” produced by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, highlighting Türkiye’s role in supporting peace initiatives in Syria.
